Dave Cooper, Oakey Chamber of Commerce President said the response from the community was encouraging.

“We had Lloyd Gill, Oakey Chamber of Commerce Vice President as MC and Phil Ryan, Dalby Chamber of Commerce President was main speaker,” he said.

“We also fielded a lot of quality questions from the audience coupled with updates from the visiting fire ant people about the current status."

An update was provided from Army Training Area Engagement Officer Corrie Van Rythoven on the upcoming arrival of Black Hawks at Oakey this year.

Representatives National Fire Ant Eradication Program
also spoke on the ongoing efforts to suppress the spread and eradicate the pest, which has so far not spread from the Army base.

Mr Cooper said, based on the response to the event, it was clear that there was the desire for regular ongoing events in Oakey.

Regular meetings at the Oakey Chamber of Commerce are some of the most well attended in the Region, matching up well against even the Toowoomba Chamber, according to one Councillor who spoke off the record.
