Hydro-powered racers ready to rumble
ANZ is sponsoring the Oakey State High School Hydrogen Horizon team in the national competition which will be run in Gladstone this year.
Oakey High students were the beneficiaries of a visit by ANZ representatives from Brisbane who were sponsoring their Hydrogen project last Wednesday.
“The purpose of our visit is community engagement and the focus on sustainability in ESG,” ANZ representative Darren Bradfield said.
“We’ll have two people up in Gladstone for the Grand Prix.”
The program is run by Horizon who also sent representatives to Oakey State High.
Horizon Education Sales Director Lisa Sullivan said the program was designed to develop innovation and problem-solving skills.
“This is six-month long program that teaches kids about renewable energy - all different types,” she said.
“Within a term, they start to develop innovation as fast as possible in a four-hour race.”
“It’s all about asking - how can I make this car go as far as possible, not just speed but efficiency?
Racing team member Aiden Hine said the team had been thinking long and hard about ways to make their remote-controlled vehicle last the distance against tough competition.
“I feel like we’re going pretty well so far,” he said.
“The suspension is too low at the moment.
“At the moment, we haven’t had to take too much time outside of school, but as the race gets closer, we’ll likely have to take some time off on Sundays.”
