Homes, vehicles lost in Millmerran blazes
Dry conditions and unpredictable winds on one of the hottest days of summer so far spelt disaster for residents of Millmerran Woods and surrounds this week.
An evacuation centre was set up on Tuesday as fires that had begun on Monday, continued to smoulder throughout the heavily wooded areas of Millmerran Woods and Cypress Gardens.
Unpredictable winds on Tuesday caused some spot fires to flare across a large swathe and as many as 28 rural fire personnel were assisting Queensland Fire and Police Services on the ground.
Water bombing continued around hot spots on Tuesday as rural fire units cut breaks around properties.
One house on Waratah Drive was destroyed in Monday night’s blaze and a neighbouring house was partially burned, while several other structures and vehicles were destroyed.
The Millmerran Show-grounds was enacted as an evacuation centre on Tuesday following a new bushfire warning (Watch and Act: Prepare to Leave) for residents in the Millmerran Woods, Cypress Gardens and Millmerran Downs areas.
Toowoomba Region Mayor Paul Antonio said: “...considering the unpredictable nature of fires, we’re asking residents to remain cautious and to stay up-to-date with all warnings being issued.”
“While it’s sad to hear of these structures being impacted, our number one priority is for the safety of our people.
“There are forecasts for multiple wind directions today and overnight so please be careful if you are in one of these impacted areas as conditions could get worse quickly.
“There is no need whatsoever for anyone to take any unnecessary risks at the moment and if residents do see any fire flare-ups, they should to call Triple 0 (000) immediately.
“When it is safe to do so, residents should also check their homes and properties for any signs of damage, particularly for ash on rain harvesting roof tops as it may affect water quality.
