Have your say: A review of the Darling Downs-Moreton Rabbit Board
The Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) is undertaking a review of the role, effectiveness and funding arrangements of the Darling Downs-Moreton Rabbit Board (DDMRB). The Southern Downs Regional Council is inviting rural landholders and agricultural producers to participate.
This collaborative approach aims to examine the effectiveness and the future role of DDMRB and the rabbit fence in a modern invasive animal control context.
Southern Downs Councillor Jo McNally said that rabbits can have significant impacts on agricultural producers in southern Queensland.
“The fence protects agricultural land in southern Queensland from the northern migration of rabbits and is complemented by DDMRB’s monitoring, enforcement and education activities in the protected area,” Councillor McNally said.
“The rabbit fence is 555km in length with approximately 174km of the exclusion fence running through the Southern Downs Regional Council area.
“DDMRB staff undertake regular patrols and maintenance of the fence and conduct surveillance, property inspections, provide rabbit management advice and compliance activities in the board area which is located on the northern side of the rabbit fence.”
The review seeks to understand the role that DDMRB and the rabbit fence play in providing protection from the adverse impacts of rabbits and to inform the magnitude and distribution of the benefits that are currently being generated by the infrastructure.
