Hamish Muller earns Reds Jersey

Hard work and determination have paid off for twenty-one years old Hamish Muller as he received his first Queensland Reds jersey against Japanese team Saitama Wild Knights in November and in a dream debut played a part in the victory made even better with his parents in the stands.

Hamish is all smiles as he proudly wears the Queensland Reds Jersey for the first time. What he didn’t know was that his parents Lisa and Ross were in the grandstand to surprise him having flown over in the hope he would make his Reds debut.
Hamish is all smiles as he proudly wears the Queensland Reds Jersey for the first time. What he didn’t know was that his parents Lisa and Ross were in the grandstand to surprise him having flown over in the hope he would make his Reds debut.

Hamish grew up on a horse property just outside Clifton and looked to play polocrosse like his brothers but at age 14 or 15 he decided Rugby was his calling.

He pursued it and excelled at Toowoomba Grammar School gaining selection in Queensland’s Under-15 and Under-16 pathway comps.

Hamish, at 21 years of age, is one of those great rugby stories where a young player grabs opportunities with both hands.

He sat on the bench for Brothers in last year’s grand final before becoming a major factor in the club going back-to-back this year in the StoreLocal Hospital Cup.

But it was starting studies in clinical exercise physiology at the University of Queensland that brought him to Brisbane.

Reds head coach Les Kiss gave a small group of high achievers from the club competition a chance to train with the Reds for a month.

The strong-running Muller impressed enough to earn a spot in the 29-strong squad for the tour of Japan.

His 19-minute cameo at No. 8 in a trial game, where he scored a try, was sharp enough to warrant selection for the cap game against the Wild Knights.

“There’s a big feeling of pride,” the 1.95m Hamish said.

“It’s a dream really because it was a shock just to get the phone call to train with the Reds before this tour.”

On returning from Japan with the Reds Hamish continues his studies at Queensland University and works with the Brisbane Broncos in a exercise physiology capacity.

While he doesn’t have a contract at the moment with the Reds Hamish is ever hopeful another opportunity will come up and at only twenty-one years of age  time is on his side.

No doubt he will be ready to grab the opportunity with both hands.
