Great start to Clifton Country Week

Clifton Country Week for 2024 under the theme ‘Days Gone By’ started well with the official opening in conjunction with the annual Art Show at the Clifton Library on Friday evening, 18 October.

Among the dignitaries who attended the official opening of Country Week, held in conjunction with the annual Art Show, were the Mayor of the Toowoomba Region, Geoff McDonald and his wife Lisa, who took the opportunity to chat with Back Roads Artist Angela Hart (left).

There was a good attendance at the opening event where Member for Condamine Pat Weir commended the work of members and volunteers of the Clifton Progress Association, the group which organises the town’s annual Country Week celebration, and noted the talents of the Back Roads Artists, the group which curated the Art Show.

Mr Weir’s comments were supported by Toowoomba Region Mayor Geoff McDonald who, with his wife Lisa, backed up to witness the first full day of Country Week on Saturday.

This year’s Street Markets drew a big crowd on Saturday morning.

The atmosphere was boosted by music provided by the likes of a garage band in the workshop at the local fuel station and a roving vocal group, the Gowrie Gals - three talented singers with great harmony, supported by a male guitar player.

Again this year there was good support for the Car and Bike Show ‘n’ Shine at St. Francis de Sales School and the Clifton Dabblers had a steady flow of visitors as the day went on.

Always popular, the heritage train trip from Warwick to Clifton brought a boost to the attendance and the add-on journey to Greenmount and return was a treat for family groups.

Throughout the morning the event was covered by a team from Radio 4WK, led by manager Paul Batchelor, who is a Clifton resident, broadcasting from the Clifton Railway Station.

The Garage Sale Trail drew a crowd on Sunday with sales at 17 sites, 12 in Clifton and five at Nobby, open for bargain hunters.

There is still a range of activities for the remainder of the week, with events up to Sunday.

The Warwick Choral Society will present a concert at the New Tivoli Theatre on Fisher Street on Friday morning from 11 o’clock.

The theme is music from film and television.

Friday will also feature a Bush Dance with local band Ridgee Didge playing in the F. E. Logan Hall.

The event not to be missed on Saturday is the annual Clifton Cup Race meeting, the social event of the year, where fast horses and stylish fashion mix beautifully.

The week comes to an end with a movie matinee at the theatre at 1.30pm on Sunday.
