Goombungee and Cecil Plains waste facilities temporarily closed due to illegal dumping
Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) last week closed both the Goombungee and Cecil Plains Waste Management Facilities after illegal dumping necessitated a clean up.
Water and Waste Portfolio leader Cr Nancy Sommerfield said it was disappointing that the incidents had occurred.
“It’s disappointing when members of the public dump the wrong sorts of materials at our waste management facilities and as a result of this occurring recently, we will have both the Goombungee and Cecil Plains facilities closed for a few days,” she said.
Both facilities are expected to re-open today however that is subject to contractor ability to complete the specialised clean-up works.
TRC has asked residents to keep an eye on the Council website for updates.
The website indicates what cannot be recycled:
- Recyclable items should not be put in a plastic bag.
- Used tissues, nappies and paper towels.
- Cling wrap, chips or plastic bags.
- Polystyrene materials.
- Ashes and burnt material
The website talks about the dangers of ash.
“Your local waste facility is in danger of catching on fire and causing considerable damage if you dispose of ash that is not completely cold before disposing of.
“Warm ash is not compatible with your plastic wheelie bin.
“Ensure that any ashes or burnt material that you are throwing away are cold all the way through before taking them to your local facility or putting them in your general waste wheelie bin.
“Soak your ash and leave it for a few days to dry out.
“A container of ash may feel cold on the outside but the centre is often warm enough that, when disposed of in the bins at the waste facility or in your wheelie bin, reignite and cause a fire.
“Materials such as waste are also mentioned.
“We cannot accept liquid waste from commercial premises.
“Commercial operators need to find alternative waste disposal options for their liquid wastes.
“Waste motor oil (from a domestic source only) is accepted at most staffed sites (check our Waste facilities page)
- 20 litres are allowed per visit
- cooking, transmission and hydraulic oils or fluids are not accepted.
- waste oils from commercial enterprises will not be accepted at any of our waste management facilities.”
