Oakey State High School participated the 2024 Farmfest Led Steer competition and had fantastic results.

For the first time Oakey High won a first place in one of the weight divisions.

‘Nellie’ the school’s Blonde d’Aquitaine heifer, purchased from Wayne and Belinda Hess of ‘Waite A Wyle’ Blonde d’Aquitaine Stud, Maclagan, has had a very successful year on the show circuit.

She has been placed at every show she as attended, but receiving this blue ribbon at Farmfest was certainly her best achievement to date.

The steer ‘Bundy’, also a Blonde d’Aquitaine purchased from Wayne and Belinda Hess, has also had a great year on the show circuit, and received a 4th placing in at Farmfest.

Little Highland calves, ‘Hamish’ and ‘Mary’ made their debut at Farmfest and were very popular with the crowd of spectators.

Oakey State High Ag Team Leader Debbie Goudie congratulated the students on their success for their hard work and thanked one particular staff member.

“Our thanks go to Mr. Joe Green our school’s agricultural assistant for helping the students break-in the cattle for showing and ensuring they always were looking fabulous on show day,” she said.

“Oakey High is now off to the Ekka to judge cattle, show and judge sheep and merino fleece, judge dairy goats and cattle!

“We are also painting a goat for an Ekka competition, they sent us the fibre glass goat and we paint it and take it to the Ekka as a part of an Ag in Schools program.”

The result follows success at the Royal Toowoomba Show, where Oakey High came home with the Champion Doe and Champion Buck of the Show and then the Supreme Angora of the Show.

At this event, student Grea Young came first in the Young Judges, while Amy Turner was second, Skye Rose third and Alicia Wieck fourth.

Earlier at the Goombungee-Haden Show, the team took out the Champion Led Steer/Heifer competition with the team’s heifer.

Student and team member Amy Turner is the best Young Judge on the Darling Downs after collecting the most points at all the Show events.
