Farmers facing a tough battle to rescue sorghum crops

Grain growers across the eastern Darling Downs have been fighting to save summer sorghum crops after weeks of heavy rainfall.

This crop of sorghum in the Sandy Camp area west of Clifton would be among the worst affected crops in the district as it stands in ground saturated after weeks of heavy rainfall.

It’s normally welcome, but the extended rainfall of the last couple of
months could not have come at a worse time for farmers waiting to harvest sorghum.

During a brief break in the weather a couple of weeks ago, headers were put into crops overnight when the forecast of more rain was issued, but not all crops were ready to come off at that stage.

There has been a varied impact but most crops have sustained yield losses, which will reduce their value.

There will be a downgrading of some crops due to sprouting.

Some farmers have been unable to get onto their paddocks even many days after the rain because the ground is saturated and the surface remains sodden.
