Edna celebrates 105th
Edna Bryce, believed to be Pittsworth’s oldest resident, still has an active enough mind and sharp enough memory to share many tales from her 105 years.
She celebrated her birthday with family on January 24 at Pittsworth Hotel Motel.
Edna was born in Toowoomba on the same date in 1918 to Heinrich (Harry) and Ellen (Nell) Weber.
Life revolved around quite a strict routine for Edna and her siblings as children - they would milk cows by hand before school then walk or ride horses to school before returning home to bring the cows in again for milking. The family lived on dairy farms around Oakey, Allora and Talgai, wherever Harry’s work took them.
Horse and sulky was the only to get supplies and her father would leave very early on these days arriving back late in the afternoon.
There was a water trough and rest area for the horse about half way to Toowoomba.
Edna married Roy Bryce in Crows Nest in 1942 and moved into their own home in Pittsworth in 1957.
They had no children but were aunt and uncle to many nieces and nephews.
Roy passed away in 1985 and Edna continued working, cleaning and performing domestic chores for families, into her 80s.
Edna never did get her driver’s licence and she was known to walk to appointments around Pittsworth even in her 90s.
She moved into Beauaraba Living two weeks before her 104th birthday.
Edna has one surviving sibling, Irene Seagrott, who recently celebrated her 95th birthday.
One of Edna’s nieces, Kathy Hohn, said a highlight of Edna’s birthday celebration was seeing her meet her great, great, great nephew Kove McIntosh who, at 15 months, shared a laugh with her.
