Denny takes on World’s Best

Allora born and raised Matthew Denny has won his way into the Australian squad that’s bound for the World Athletics Championships scheduled to be held in 2022 in Eugene, Oregon in the United States from July 15 to 24.

The win at the Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney last week has also put Denny into the Australian team for the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Bermingham, England.

Those games start four days after the Oregon Championships.

Denny threw well below his best in Sydney but his 62.79 metre discus throw did the job.

His personal best came at the Beijing Olympic Games when his 67.02 metre effort was just 5cm short of a bronze medal.

However, he is confident that a medal is on the cards this time.

Denny’s performance in Sydney was impressive given that he had sustained a serious injury during training a few weeks earlier.

He was doing a 160kg eccentric bench press and the weight fell directly onto his chest and effectively choked him.

Denny told reporters it was probably the scariest thing that’s ever happened to him.

He said it was he first time he had ever had a panic attack afterwards.

As he continues his quest for more success, Denny will head overseas for four months in May.

The tour will include participation in the 2022 Diamond League, which covers venues in Doha, Qatar, Birmingham, UK and Oregon USA.
