Christmas bells ring in the season
Not-for-profit organisation Kreation Music is bringing the Christmas cheer with a festive concert in December.
Kreation Music is all about enabling choirs, music groups and performers in the local area to experience events that would normally be out of reach.
Supported by the Toowoomba Regional Council Cultural and Arts Support Grant Program, Kreation Music last year ran a project to record a collaboration of Christmas songs using local community groups and artists.
Based in Greenmount, the Director of Kreation Music, Cassie Midgley, explained that the CD project gave participants an exciting goal to work towards throughout the year, which was particularly important after the challenges of Covid-related restrictions.
The project culminated in a Christmas concert at the Empire Church Theatre, featuring a number of songs from the CD performed by the groups and artists involved, including local singing group, Amity Quartet.
“We normally sing at charity or community events around Nobby, Allora and Clifton, such as Australia Day, so recording a song on a CD and performing at the Empire Theatre was an amazing experience,” Amity member Don Burge said.
“We were overwhelmed by the level of support received from the community for the project, with the Christmas concert completely selling out,” Ms Midgley explained.
“With the incredible local talent we have here in the Darling Downs region, it got us thinking that maybe we could try for a bigger concert event in 2022.”
This year’s concert will feature men’s chorus High Altitude Harmony and the Toowoomba Municipal Band, along with Toowoombells Handbell Ensemble and soloist Calista Walters.
“Smaller community ensembles don’t often have the chance to perform at the iconic Empire Theatre and all three groups are excited at the opportunity to be involved,” Ms Midgley said.
Kreation Music successfully applied for funding support from Toowoomba Regional Council to move the concert to the larger Armitage Centre.
“By the time we had an entire choir, handbell ensemble, quartet, keyboard and various soloists on stage, it was quite a squash. We’re looking forward to having more space for both the audience and the performers.
“This will be a concert for locals, performed by locals, and we’d really love the community to once again get behind the amazing musical talent we have here in the region,” Ms Midgley said.
