Brymaroo hockey mum recognised as Downs Sports Volunteer of the Year

When not working on the family feedlot at Brymaroo, Alisa Panzram is the woman helping run things behind the scenes at the Past High Hockey Club in Toowoomba.

Like most volunteers, Alisa prefers to remain out of the spotlight while the juniors and seniors shine on the pitch.

However, on Saturday night Alisa was recognised as the Volunteer of the Year at the Sports Darling Downs Awards in Toowoomba.

“It was a great surprise when it was announced,” she said.

“Lots of people have been in touch.

“It’s lovely recognition.”

Alisa credits her can-do attitude towards volunteering to her upbringing in a small farming community.

“You just do what you’ve got to do,” she said.

Hockey season is rapidly approaching and locals in Oakey and surrounds would have noticed promotional signs appearing across the district.

“Sign on is on this Saturday,” Alisa said.

With a growing pool of players including from the Yazidi community, Toowoomba Hockey is looking for an upgrade to its facilities.

Alisa said an upgrade would be a major boost for the Toowoomba hockey community, which is largely self-funded.

“Garth Hamilton will be there on Saturday with his petition,” she said.

With the 2032 Olympics coming up, there’s the potential for an upgraded facility to be involved.

“It would be amazing if it could be a practice facility for one of the teams,” Alisa said.

If you’d like to play hockey, search Toowoomba Hockey online or ring one of the clubs directly.
