Breakfast sustains community link
Clifton State High School’s annual industry Breakfast took place recently with the school hosting a number of representatives of local business and industry as well as representatives from vocational organisations.
This year’s guest speaker was Lauren Russell, a Project Officer from the Toowoomba Regional Jobs Committee.
The Jobs Committees is part of a Queensland Government plan to work with stakeholders to create more jobs, improve training pathways and raise investment in the State’s businesses and workforces.
The aim of the Jobs Committee, which was formed last year, is to drive job growth in the Toowoomba Region and plan for the future by developing strategies that address local workforce and skills issues, identifying new skills opportunities and ensuring the local workforce has the skills needed to fill future jobs.
Locally, the Committee has developed a Toowoomba Workforce Strategy, included in which is a dedicated website, Employ Toowoomba.
The site enables businesses looking for workers to link with services that will make the task easier.
It also provides information and resources for those young people who are looking for employment.
Since its establishment, the Jobs Committee has run two virtual jobs fairs.
The first featured about 300 jobs and around 300 people logged in.
The second was not as successful.
Although the same number of jobs was highlighted, the virtual job fair attracted only 80 people to log in.
Of particular interest to those in regional areas is the move to support training for work on the land.
The Committee wants to create farm-ready workers to tackle up jobs across the region.
Through its website,the organisation is providing information for people who would like to work in agriculture but need to know more about the type of work on offer and how to get into it.
The Jobs Committee is also striving to create a better link between businesses and schools to enable students to have a better idea of what to expect when they move towards their future.
