Between 12th and 18th January, Mia travelled to Helensvale to compete in the Junior State Championships.

She contested four events: Under 18s Fours, Under 18s Triples, Under 15s Pairs and Under 15s Girls Singles.

She placed second in the Fours, Pairs and Singles events.

But it was Mia’s encouragement and fairness toward the other players that led to her receiving the Sportsmanship Award.

A representative from BQ said Mia captured the hearts of many spectators and players for the sportsmanship she conveyed during the Championships.

“Whether winning or losing, Mia supported her team mates, clapped opposition bowls and was regularly seen with a smile on her face,” the representative said.

A highlight was when Mia was seen assisting one of her young opponents in how to correctly fill in the scorecard.

This moment was captured and printed on the plaque that Mia received from the Vice President of BQ, Wendy Wilson, who announced this award would be a regular addition in future Championships.

The Millmerran Bowls Club was proud to congratulate Mia on her achievement.

In 2024, former President, the late Chris Kearey, instigated the donation of funds to assist Mia with future expenses.

The Club presented over $400 to her on January 24th.

The Millmerran Bowls Club has promised more fundraising activities will be held throughout the year to continue to support her.

Mia started bowling over two years ago, when she decided to visit the club for a game with her grandfather, Ray.

“It just started off as a bit of fun,” Mia said.

“Then I started playing competition because I really liked it.”

Following her fantastic achievements at the Queensland Junior State Championships, Mia was selected as one of 12 bowlers in the Under 18 State Squad.

Eight of the selected girls will compete and four will be in reserve.

Mia was the only bowler selected from the Toowoomba Region.

Her father, Brenden Scurr, was proud to see Mia achieve this selection and have her fair and generous qualities recognised in the Sportsmanship Award.

With her selection in the Under 18s State Squad she could be travelling to Tasmania in November to compete.
