Women

Oakey 28 d. Highfields 6

After a lacklustre first half, the Oakey Bears women made it three wins in a row against Highfields at Kuhls Road.

Some of Bears looked like they might be feeling the after-effects of volunteering at Eat Street on Friday night, and then backing it up at a wedding the next day.

But the team bounced back in the second half with a shut-out 18-0 performance.

Erikana Dean scored a hat trick of tries.

Coach Eddie Dean said he was happy with the energy his side showed in the second half.

“Poppy Collins and Kyah Black went well up the middle,” he said.

Highfields 40 d. Oakey 20

Highfields Eagles showed they will be hard to beat this season with an impressive win over Oakey.

Their first half was superb, racing to a 28-4 lead at the break.

To Oakey’s credit they played a lot better in the second stanza to score more points than the Eagles, eventually going down 40-20.

Cory Haywood was the player of the match in his first permanent gig this season at half back for Highfields.

Haywood and five-eighth Declan Ryan stood up after the late withdrawal of
Eagles Captain-Coach Jarrod Lee.

Oakey played well in the second half with Letuia Eliu scoring a double and Komiti Vetemotu also playing well.

The Bears now travel to Newtown whilst Highfields has a tough road trip to Clifton to take on Wattles.

Highfields 40 (Brauer 2, Ramsay 2, Rarabalavu, Saurara, Betros tries Cory Haywood 6 goals) defeated Oakey 20 (Letuia Eliu 2, Jerry Pati, Rama Kamoe tries Kamiti Vetemotu 2 goals)

Webcke Price Medal points: 3, Haywood (Highfields); 2, Letuia Eliu (Oakey); 1, Clement (Highfields)

Reserve Grade

Oakey 24 d. Highfields 22

In a display of grit and determination, the Oakey reserves hung tough to claim their first win of the season over Highfields at Kuhls Road.

Leading the way in the 24-22 win was lock Jessie Lane, with forwards Jayme Turl and Cooper “Bulldog” Prosser inspiring their team mates to step up when their team needed it most.

An injury to half Dylan Crump, was exceptionally well-covered by junior player Brady Dodd.

Coach Laurie Stewart said it was his side’s most complete performance to date.

“We stayed in the fight right through,” he said.

“Our attitude and effort was exceptional.

“Jayme Turl and Bulldog led the way (in this regard).

“It paved the way for the rest of the team.”

“I’m very proud of them.”

The Oakey reserves will be hoping to make it two on the bounce when they travel to winless Newtown next week.

Oakey 24 (Brayden Schilf, Massey Collins-Wharton, Dylan Crump, Aaifou Potolo, Luifa’aola Kelemete tries Brady Dodd 2 goals) defeated Highfields 22.
