Awards for Woodworkers
Oakey Men’s Shed’s Stephen Clarke picked up a Golden Gouge award, while member John Greenhalgh received a Judges Commendation at the Golden Gouge Woodcrafters Competition.
Stephen took out the top gong for his jewellery box creation, which was exhibited at the Toowoomba Showgrounds in September.
The box was created out of tambour wood and was intricately crafted, impressing the judges.
Meanwhile, John received a commendation for his creation of a lantern with walnut and Huon pine, thick glass and a wick turner.
John got the idea from British woodworker Ian Harris’ creation in a 1989 Woodworking magazine.
Both men received a Carbatec woodworking voucher for their efforts in the competition.
The Golden Gouge competition is held annually and aims to fine woodcraft in the Darling Downs community.
Judging is based on design (including factors such as proportion and perspective, line, choice of timber, originality of design and aesthetic appeal), best use of material, degree of difficulty, finish and workmanship and technique (including factors such as tool technique, accuracy and clean edges).
Competitors were scored out of a 100 in their class.
