Arch Celebrates A Milestone
Allora resident Arch Chandler was surrounded by family for his 100th birthday party.
It’s been a very special time for Arch after celebrating 75 years of marriage last month with the love of his life, Daphne.
Both Arch and Daphne now reside at the Allora Homestead and enjoy the comforts, great staff and fellow-ship of other residents.
Looking back - Arch was born in Glen Innes on 2nd May 1923.
At the age of 5 his family of Mum, Dad and 6 children moved to Brookstead. It took 2 days as the roads were unsealed and top speed was 30 miles an hour. There he rode a horse about 5 and a half miles to school.
Following the sale of the property, Arch then went to Dalby State School for about 6 months before the family relocated to Pikedale, Stanthorpe on a sheep property of 3,300 acres. Living 22 miles out of Stanthorpe called for correspondence schooling.
Arch arrived in Allora on his 12th Birthday where he attended the Upper Spring Creek School.
On leaving school he helped clear and fence country to enable crops to be grown. It was hard work back then as machinery wasn’t as it is today.
Arch was a partner in an ice run in Toowoomba and also worked at The Toowoomba Foundry.
The love of the land saw them return to Allora to share-farm a dairy farm.
They then bought their own farm in Joel Park Road and established a sheep and grain farm where they lived until retirement.
Arch was highly involved in his church and Indoor Bowls, these days still very interested in watching Tennis and Footy.
Longevity — He’d probably say A Hard Days Work Hurt No One!!!
