New alert system for irksome road
The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has implemented an alert level system due to large slow-moving landslide affecting a section of Gatton Clifton Road at Mount Whitestone.

The landslide is contributing to road deformation and there is some risk of debris falling onto the road and becoming a hazard for motorists.
Seasonal wet weather can also impact the rate and scale of movement.
TMR has installed signs on Gatton–Clifton Road to alert motorists ahead of the landslip risk zone and about changing road conditions.
The current level of alert is ADVICE.
Motorists are advised:
the landslide may cause road deformation and/or debris to fall on the road
please observe reduced speeds, drive carefully, and follow traffic signs.
The alert level WATCH AND ACT is implemented when heavy rainfall is forecast or occurs, there is a moderate increase in the rate of landslide movement and/or there are minor safety hazards or poor road conditions.
Access to Gatton–Clifton Road at Mount Whitestone may be restricted.
The alert level is raised to EMERGENCY WARNING if a severe rainfall event is forecast or occurs, there is a significant increase in the rate of landslide movement and/or there are significant safety hazards or unsafe road conditions, Gatton–Clifton Road at Mount Whitestone will be remotely or automatically closed to all traffic.
Motorists will be advised:
the road is closed due to a landslide
if travelling between Gatton and Clifton, you must find an alternative route
TMR is assessing the area to determine if and when safe access may be restored
TMR Mt Whitestone Recovery Project Manager, Murray Peacock said the Gatton–Clifton Road is an important link for communities and businesses between the Lockyer Valley and Darling Downs.
“We aim to give motorists plenty of warning about the conditions on the Gatton–Clifton Road at the Mount Whitestone landslip, and have the ability to quickly and easily limit access or close the road and reopen it again when appropriate,” Mr Peacock said.
“It is essential that people are aware and have the information they need to make good decisions when choosing their journey to drive safely on our roads.”
Up-to-date information on road conditions is available for motorists on road signs and on

While the landslip zone is inspected regularly, the department also encourages motorists to report any hazards to the state-wide traffic management centre on 13 19 40.
